Bears or shash are associated with the mountains and are sometimes called dził diné or mountain people. Bear fell asleep near the end of the original shoe game that the animals played to determine day and night. When the other animals woke Bear up and told him to go home, he accidentally put his shoes on the wrong feet, mixing up left and right. That is why bear paws stick out differently from most animals. His fur was originally all black but as he walked back home to the mountains, some of his fur got bleached by the sun. That’s why bears in Navajo country have lots of brownish fur.
